Stocking the Toolshed with the Right Gardening Tools

If you are lucky enough to have a backyard and thinking about setting up a tool shed to house all you’re gardening tools, preventing them from messing up and dirtying your garage, then there are a few things you need to consider before you get started.

What you want is to make sure the shed has all that you want for your regular gardening work and lawn care like a water hose reel, lawn mower, gloves etc. so that the shed works efficiently for you and your family. Some basic guidelines for stocking a gardening toolshed will serve you well in the long run. Opt for high-quality tools as cheaper low-quality tools can break and wear out quickly.

Think through the most important tools you want to invest in first and as time goes by, you will realise what additional tools you require for your gardening work. Go through gardening catalogues and websites to understand what tools are available and their uses. Consider also the age and skill level of those who will be using the tools, you will want to adjust your purchases accordingly.

Paying attention to selecting the right tools that not only feel easier to use by different family members but will also last for several years is an important consideration. Tools that are made of plastic or composite material such as fibreglass are lighter than traditional steel and wood tools but tend to break easily. Pay attention to the area where the handle of the tool is fixed to the head of the tool. This is usually where the break happens. Look for handles that are fitted with bolts or rivets within a socket to keep the tool firmly fixed to the handle.

Add a trowel which is a small shovel to your toolshed. The narrow head type is much easier to handle compared to the wide head model. Test it out to see if it feels right for you as you will be using it a lot, from digging out weeds to planting and transplanting.

A shovel is probably the most used tool when gardening, so consider this an important purchase. When choosing a shovel think about who will be using it often and what tasks it will be used for? Because shovels come in different sizes and also shapes you don’t want to end up with one that is ill-suited to the task or too heavy or light.

Next, you will need a rake. While there are two different types of rakes to choose from a garden rake for smoothing and a leaf rake for raking leaves, you may not need both types or you may pick up the one that suits your needs most.

Last but not least is a pair of hand pruners. You will be using these frequently to prune your plants. If you have larger plants or woody plants consider a lopper which is a larger version of a pruner used by both hands.
